After the incident of 9/11, Sikhs living around the globe have been misunderstood, physically attacked and looked down upon with suspicion. So, it becomes the responsibility of every Sikh to raise awareness throughout the world as to who Sikhs are, what does our religious doctrines say, and let the world know that the followers of this fifth biggest religion in the world are the most peaceful people in the planet.

                          I keep telling everybody:

                                    I am a Sikh!

Sikhs are not part of the Taliban, nor are we followers of Muslim or Hindu Faith.

Sikhi is a distinct religion of peace, love and equality for whole humanity.

Sikhs worship the One Supreme Truth, the One Ocean of Mercy, the One Creator Lord.

Sikhs do not keep fasts, go to the pilgrimages or pray to idols.

Sikhs follow three principles of constantly remembering the Lord, living and working honestly, and sharing with others.

                                     I say.

“My Turban is not a hat, nor a mere piece of cloth

My Turban is a gift which I cannot discard”.

Defending my identity and religion I say:

My hairs are not useless.

My hair is a gift, a tool, and a technology bestowed upon the body by the Creator Lord.

Each and every hair on my body has a practical and spiritual function, is like electric wires which vibrate and pick up spiritual energy.

The hair on top of my head protects my skull and brain.

The hair on my body insulates my body, keeping me warm in the cold, and cool in the heat.

“Your belief determines your action and your action determines your results, but first you have to believe”.

Jasnoor Ji,

Sikhs have always been at the receiving end from the Muslims throughout the history till date.

I like what you wrote about your turban.  I wonder if Sikhs should not only defend and educate on Sikhism, but also to bring a more realistic view of Islam to others also.   I have heard the Gurus defended Muslims as much as Sikhs when the situations were right.

Siri Sundri Kaur Ji,

Sikhs are Sikhs, whether they are White, Black or Brown Sikhs, whether they are of the Indian background or the indigenous Americans.  Today our issues are common, we ought to fight it collectively.

I love what you say , and yes, you are right, people think that Sikhs are Muslim, and some time is difficult for Indian sikh living in America, but can you imaging how is it for American Sikh? specially in some states like  Florida that have no knowledge about what Sikhism is.
