Punjabi Sikhs in particular have often stressed too much in learning the Punjabi language rather than giving emphasis on Sikhi. The day Guru Gobind Singh Ji made the Khalsas, the Panj Payares differed in their mother tongue and that day itself all the language, caste, and nationality barriers were removed from Sikhi. Had Punjabi been of prime importance for Guru Gobind Singh Ji then he would have made the Panj Payares out of the local population of the Punjabi speaking people.

Sikhi is for the whole mankind not just limited to Punjabi Sikhs. Punjabi Sikhs ought to give more importance in learning the principles of Sikhi rather than being obsessed with their language.

To Nita: I'd say the best way is to call to local gurdwaras and ask them if they have punjabi classes or you can do it online.

I work in a school (and with a lot of Punjabi woman) with quite a few Asian families, so I am fortunate enough to have "picked up" some VERY basic (maybe 4 or 5 ) words LOL!
I would love to learn but have been told that my natural accent is very strong and makes it difficult to understand what I am saying. If anyone knows of a place for adults in London - I would love to hear about it :)

I Started learning Punjabi last year and there was a good mix of people. Ive never learnt a language before and was really nervous going but everybody is at the same level and the teacher was really helpful. We started learning the basics such as: Mera naam Jason Hai, Tuhaadu kee hal hai. Then went on to learn about family members and counting. After that we started to learn the written language which looks like its hanging off a clothes horse lol. I can read the letters fluently but dont necessary have a clue to what it means, only how it sounds. Im hoping to go to Amritsar and im sure my punjabi classes would have helped. Plus its been very enriching to actually learn another language.
