Welcome to New to Sikhi community
WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA,
WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH.
IT IS ALWAYS WRONGLY PRESUMED THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG FOR A SIKH TO CONSUME MEAT, POULTRY AND FISH. ON THE CONTRARY THE SIKHS(BAPTIZED SIKHS) AS PER THE REHAT ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO CONSUME IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. IF THEY DO SO IT WOULD BE A CLEAR BREACH OF THE SIKH REHAT MARYADA.
WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA,
WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH.

Thanks.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh.
There are Sikhs who cut their hairs and still call them Sikhs. In a same way there are Sikhs who follow Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teaching and don't eat meat and others do.
Most of the Sikhs I know in India are vegetarian. Many Sikhs are vegetarian to show respect for animal life.

Yes, i do agree with you that many Sikhs are vegetarian to show respect for animal life, as per Sikhi even animals, birds and all other creatures in this world have a soul they are all Akal Purakh's creation so we have no right to kill them and eat their flesh.
As far as those Sikhs who trim their bodily hairs are concerned the Rehat says they are Patits, the fallen Sikhs like what is the Indian state of Punjab today whose majority of the population is no more Sikhs but Patits.

When a Sikh gets baptized(Amritdhari), they are specifically told the Do's and Don't of the Rehat as authorized by the Akal Takhat and the day i got re-baptized at one of the most revered places on earth, Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, Delhi all the Sikhs present there who wished to get baptized were told that henceforth you all are supposed not to consume any meat, poultry and fish and they were told as per the Rehat they have to be pure vegetarians, hence the word Vegetarian Amritdhari. There is nothing new about it. The Rehats issued by the Akal Takhat, the highest seat of Sikh authority are like the Supreme words for us(Sikhs), and it doesn't mean that Nihangs don't follow the Rehats, so why should we.
Thankyou.

Rehat was not created by gurus...
By Rehat rules: Sikh should only marry Sikh, so how come baba ji married me & my jaan in gurdwara in Amritsar?

The first video is ridiculous. Many Sikhs are vegetarian to show respect for animal life.
The second video is pretty good. I can't stop laughing :D

Many thanks for this link. This is a really informative video with the quotes from the SGGS.
I am hoping to write an article for a vegetarian magazine about Sikhi and Vegetarianism, so this is great!
Best wishes
Parminder

This video shows passages of SGGS and also guru Nanak why not to eat meat. Maybe shocking (especially the beginning).
This video......??!
Sikh saves animal
Peter said:satnam,
In the sri guru granth sahib I have only seen textures not to eat meat (also eggs), not to consume alcohol or tobacco (or other drugs) or sacrifice a goat (or other animals).
Please tell me if you have seen other textures.
Maybe in war time some people have used bang (milk with marijuana). But that is maybe another topic.

I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years so the topic of vegetarianism in Sikhism is very interesting to me.
How come amritdhari are told to be vegetarian? Is it for the sake of the animal or another reason like what it would mean spiritually to consume meat? I am a vegetarian (wish I could go vegan, but can't seem to get that to happen yet) because I'm so concerned about animal rights and welfare.
What are some of the common reasons a non-baptized Sikh would stop eating meat?
I read in a book recently that the 10th guru slaughtered some goats. Also the gurus went hunting. I was upset when I read those things, but I'm trying to work through these things rather than abandon Sikhism at this point. So any info I can get would be great.
I had to turn off the video linked to by Peter ji because I freaked when I saw the cow like that. Maybe Peter could share the passages that were in that video so that those who are too upset to watch it can learn more about vegetarianism in Sikhism.
