Wanting to start wearing a turban

I am an unbaptised Sikh. My parents are still unable to recognize my decision to convert to Sikhism from Christianity, and I'm tired of waiting for their approval. I worry it will never come. I am a light skinned, blonde haired and blue eyed woman, and I would like to wear the turban. I bought a white one over a week ago. I am concerned about how my parents will react when they see me wearing one. (For the record, I am 21 years old and I have been living on my own for two years, so I know this…See More

"I have not yet been baptised either. The closest gurdwara to me is about a 20-25 minute bus ride, and although I don't speak Punjabi, I have not heard anyone say that there is a certain about of time needed to spend at a gurdwara. I go when…"

If you are here, please do join this community!

Sat Sri Akal Dear Sangat Ji,

It's amazing how quickly time flies by. I still remember that snowy evening when idea of creating community for New Sikhs came to my mind. It was my birthday and I was waiting for my dearest to come back home who were stuck in heavy snowfall.
So it wasn't bad idea after all. Since the launch 30.000 people visited NTS. It had 127.000 page views from 120 countries. Although at some point, I was considering closing it down because I could not keep up (I'm a mom and working full time) but how can I just abandon it now?
So now I have bigger plans for it even if it means I’ll have less sleep.

Do you think we need New To Sikhi? Leave me a comment here.

Anything will be appreciated!

Yours truly, Danka

Once Guru Nanak happened to visit Hardwar town.

Once Guru Nanak happened to visit Hardwar town.

There he saw some people throwing handfuls of water from river Ganges, towards

the sun in the east. They believed that by this ritual they could offer water to their

dead elders in the next world.

Guru Nanak went into the river and started throwing water towards the west.

As those people saw the Guru acting strange, they forgot their ritual.

They flocked to the Guru and laughed at his funny action. They…

Please excuse me not being around much.

It is a long story, but about a year I was given an addictive medication by my doctor at the time. I did not know it was addictive until I suddenly stopped taking it. I want t make clear that in my past I have done wrong things, but I am not a drug addict at all at this point in my life. I have ecomevery ill from this medication and have to keep taking it so that I can taper off of it slowly. The effects of this are both physically and psychologically painful. I pray every night for things…

Maintaning my practices without the Gurudwara

Posted by Savera on January 22, 2012 at 18:30 2 Comments

It can be extremely challenging at times. There are no Gurudwaras around me so I don't have the option of forming any connections with other Sikhs in my day to day life. I know I'm not the only one with this issue. The things that help me a lot are just continuing to read the SGGS and nitnem. I find myself watching a lot of videos online about Sikhi and the history of Sikhs. I play the radio stations on Sikhnet a lot and try to converse with ther Sikhs online as much as possible. Hopefully…
